36 Mumbai cops caught taking bribes to allow illegal constructions, suspended

The suspension came after the cops were caught taking bribes in a sting operation conducted by a social activist.

MUMBAI:  The Mumbai Police on Wednesday suspended 36 policemen for allegedly taking bribes to allow illegal constructions in Mumbai's Kurla area, say media reports. The Mumbai Police have ordered an inquiry against the suspended cops.

The suspension comes days after the collapse of an illegal building inThane. A total of 74 people had died in the crash, making it the worst-ever building collapse in Maharashtra in a decade.

Earlier, the police had arrested nine men in connection with the building collapse. All the arrested were charged with culpable homicide not amounting to murder.

The building collapse had thrown light on the ugly nexus of builders, politicians and the administration.

Thane Municipal Commissioner (TMC) has stated, on record, that when he tried to take action against illegal and unauthorised buildings in Thane, he faced "political pressure" and had to resist a particular politician who dragged him to court over the issue.

His officers were "brutally attacked by the mafia" in Mumbra when they went there to demolish unauthorised buildings.
