When defending champions Kolkata Knight Riders won the first match of the sixth edition of the Pepsi Indian Premier League against Delhi Daredevils at the Eden Gardens, skipper Gautam Gambhir said the basic reason behind the clinical performance was team spirit and bonhomie among the players.
Gambhir has always tried to portray that the team interest gets priority over that of individuals. But that ploy seems to have backfired as he not only failed to find the winning combination post the Delhi win — winning just three of their next 11 matches – but the bonhomie seems to also have gone for a toss as was evident by Manoj Tiwary’s tweet on Tuesday night.
Clearing frustrated after being left out against Mumbai Indians, Tiwary vented his anger on the social networking site, tweeting: “ 2day is d worst day in my cricketin career.. Never ever gonna digest dis day all my life..”
Official says team is still united despite incident
While the India international was quick to retract and claim his account was hacked, his frustration isn’t unjustified.
For a player who has been on the fringes of the national team for the past two years, he has been shown the door by the KKR management and his place has been taken by the likes of Yusuf Pathan — 190 runs in 12 matches — and Debabrata Das — 67 runs in eight matches.
Agreed that Tiwary himself hasn’t been in the pink of form — 107 runs in seven matches — but not getting picked even in the 15 for Tuesday’s match was what prompted the outburst.
KKR officials tried to put up a brave face. Speaking to MAIL TODAY , a senior KKR official said that the team remains united and one-off incidents don’t damage camaraderie.
“We understand that Tiwary couldn’t take the fact that he wasn’t part of the team and stormed out of the meeting when he realised he wouldn’t be travelling to the Wankhede Stadium with us, but then we are trying to pick the best possible players.
“It was a heat-of-the-moment act from him and we all know that he didn’t mean any harm. It does happen when you lose calm and it
has become a fashion to vent your anger on social media, but then, the team stands united. Also, we in KKR don’t believe that players should be refrained from using any technology or the need to put any ban on them,” he said.
Asked if the management would take any action, he said: “ The management will definitely discuss the event.
Since we played on Tuesday and are travelling to Pune today, it will take some time.” Meanwhile someone close to Tiwary has confirmed that although the Bengal captain was wrong in sharing his emotions on a public platform, his act was a case of reacting to perceived humiliation as Tiwary wears his heart on the sleeve. “He wasn’t offended that he didn’t find a place in the playing XI. What irked him was that even the likes of Sumit Narwal, Paras Dogra, Sachithra Senanayake and Ryan ten Doeschate were considered to be ahead of him in the pecking order.
“Even then, he asked Gambhir and ( oach) Trevor Bayliss about the decision taken and when he didn’t get satisfactory answers, he stormed out of the meeting. And as the team was getting ready to leave for the ground, he vented his anger first at KKR co-owner Jay Mehta and then on Twitter,” the source said.
KKR know how to remain in news, regardless of their on-field performance. Be it the multiple captain theory of John Buchanan, the racism charge on coaching staff or the ‘Fake IPL player’ blog, there is always something to say about the team. Manoj Tiwary’s rant provides yet another pretext for this.
