Oral Birth Control Pills – The Naked Truth

Birth control is serious and important subject. Pleasure of sex can vanish into the air if a couple doesn’t take right birth control measures.

Oral Birth Control Pills

In our new series “The Naked Truth” Shilpa gives honest answers to the sex and health related queries.
Q. A 20-year-old from Pune writes: “I’m having sex with my boyfriend but I’m scared of getting pregnant. I want to get on the birth control pill but I don’t know if I should. Can you explain the options?”
A. There are two types of pills. One is a combination oral pill that contains two hormones- oestrogen and progesterone, hormones that are produced by ovaries in women. The increased amount of hormone stops the development and release of the egg in the ovary. This is the most common type.
The other type of pill is also known as the mini-pill and it contains only one hormone- progesterone. It works by suppressing ovulation and prevents the male’s sperm from reaching the egg.
The pill is 99% effective provided that the pill is taken at the same time every day. During your period, you take 7 placebo pills, pills with no hormones.
If you forget to take a pill, take is as soon as you remember. If you don’t remember until the next day, take two that day.
Pill is usually effective within the first month of starting. You can stop the pill whenever you are ready. You may be able to conceive within days of stopping or few months. It varies from person to person.
Pill can also help with menstrual problems and cramps.
For all these, consult a doctor as they have side effects, doses, types all vary from girl to girl. There are numerous types, and not everyone may be eligible for oral pills based on their medical history.
Note:  Birth control won’t reduce the risk of STI so use a condom for that.
