10 Must-Watch Bollywood Horror Movies

Curl up on your sofa, cover yourself with sheets and turn on the TV. With this list of the most popular horror flicks Bollywood has doled out over the years, you will eventually shift from your comfortable position to the edge of your seat!
Here they are in chronological order:

1. Nagin (1976)

alt
This is not the first movie made on the myth of the snake-woman, and certainly will not be the last, as Ekta Kapoor is remaking the original after buying the rights. And yet, this Reena Roy-Jeetendra starrer became a cult movie of sorts. Undoubtedly, the theme of serpent-seeking-revenge plot has been quite a favorite among the Indian audience.

2. 100 Days (1991)

alt
More thriller than horror, ‘100 Days’ was another cult movie that gripped the audience in the 90s. Starring popular stars of that age, Madhuri Dixit and Jackie Shroff, this flick deals with the idea of extrasensory perception (ESP) and how it helps the heroine to delve deep into the murder of her sister.

3. Raat (1992)

alt
‘Raat’ was Ram Gopal Verma’s debut horror movie as producer, and it comes packed to the rafters with spine-tingling chills and scares. Revathi, as the protagonist, had given a memorable performance, as her life starts going haywire after a neighborhood cat is accidentally killed by her father’s car.

4. Raaz (2002)

alt
Loosely adapted from the Hollywood flick ‘What Lies Beneath’, ‘Raaz’ is a Mahesh Bhatt production that went on to be made into 2 sequels. This movie was quite the rage when it was released over a decade ago – Bipasha Basu and the soundtrack being cherries on top of the scary pie.

5. Darna Mana Hai (2003)

alt
An original format for a horror movie, this RGV movie collates 6 short stories into one, giving the audience different ways to get spooked. With a star-studded cast, this movie did not do too well at the box office, its sequel ‘Darna Zaroori Hai’ even more so. However, it was a new take on the horror genre, and is worth a watch!

6. Bhoot (2003)

alt
RGV churns out horror movies faster than you can say, “Boo!” This one, starring Urmila Matondkar and Ajay Devgan, went on to have a sequel called ‘Bhoot Returns’. Dealing with possession, the cinematography is brilliant and makes for a nail-biting watch, to say the least!

7. Vaastu Shastra (2004)

alt
New house: check; little boy: check; imaginary friends: check. RGV takes the most popular ingredients, mixes them and voila! You have ‘Vaastu Shastra’. With dark characters, decent special effects and some superb acting by Sushmita Sen and the other actors, this movie is a good choice for a horror movie.

8. 1920 (2008)

alt
Vikram Bhatt directed ‘1920’ is a period horror film, which garnered both critical and commercial success and went on to become a sequel, ‘1920: Evil Returns’. For those who believe that religious chants are the biggest weapon to ward off evil spirits, this movie is bang on for them!

9. Click (2010)

alt
‘Click’ is a remake of the 2004 Thai horror movie ‘Shutter’, which was also remade in the USA by the same name in 2008. It fared horribly in the box office – fate of most Bollywood horror movies. Directed by Sangeeth Sivan, this movie featured Shreyas Talpade and Sneha Ullal.

10. Haunted – 3D (2011)

alt
With the highest opening ever for an Indian horror film, this movie took the genre to a new level by being released in 3D. With a not-so-interesting cast, the film was released to mixed reviews. Apparently Vikram Bhatt did something right, and the sequel is all set to release later this year!
