Movies Review: Madras Cafe

Madras Cafe: The filmCast: John Abraham, Nargis Fakhri, Siddharth Basu
Direction: Shoojit Sircar
Rating: ***1/2
‘Madras Cafe’ is an engaging tale. Commendable mostly because Shoojit Sircar manages to weave an interesting plot and well-executed conflict stories are a rarity in Bollywood.
Any political thriller runs the risk of being biased and I am sure there will be an equal share of viewers who will be offended by the alleged pro-state stance taken by the director. To be fair to him, however, the narrative at various times does mention that every one has their version of the truth and it just depends on perspective.
Or like our protagonist reiterates, one man’s revolutionary is another man’s terrorist.
The director has also made it quite clear that the Indian state was quite ambiguous in its approach and subsequent resolution during the crisis. Prejudices aside, I am just looking at the cinematic merits of the film.
The film provides a comprehensive context to the Sri Lankan civil war and a taut narrative ensures that the pace does not slacken. I would assume the biggest challenge for the director was to sustain the tension in a story where we already know the outcome of the assassination attempt.
And on that account, Sircar delivers superbly. The action and the gun battle sequences are brilliantly filmed where he uses close-ups, black-and-whites and still photography to great effect.
The inconsistencies that standout like a sore thumb – a war correspondent needs little persuasion to divulge her sources and the LTF operatives wear cyanide capsules around their neck, but it doesn’t take too much of an effort for the police to break the ones who have been captured.
When they are trying to foil the assassination bid, they catch a chemical engineer who shares an integral trivia about the bombs that have been custom made for the attack. The RAW agents have this crucial information and are working against all odds to try and prevent the attack, shouldn’t they first share this unique character of the bomb with the security officials rather than wait for our hero to get there?
John Abraham may not be good with emotions but he has got the right body language for a covert army operative and is immensely convincing. Nargis Fakhri fortunately doesn’t have much to do but I am tired of journalists being stereotyped as incessantly cigarette-smoking women, as if that’s all they do.
Siddharth Basu and Dibang are effective in their debut roles.
‘Madras Cafe’ undoubtedly makes for an engrossing watch, a little more attention to detail and the film would have been brilliant.

Top 25 Handset Hotlist for August-2013: Android phones with powerful camera in demand

Source :The Mobile Indian,

Of the 25 most viewed handsets in India, 14 come with rear camera of 8 megapixels or more resolution. Interestingly all these phones were based on Android operating system.

Of late, smartphones are increasingly being used as default camera, replacing the traditional digital cameras. In the last18 months, we have rarely come across a decent smartphone or feature phone that doesn't have a camera. Digital camera manufacturers have also said it on record that their businesses have taken a hit because of the rise of phones with camera capabilities.
This is also reflected in 'The Handset Hotlist Survey' of July, which was conducted by The Mobile Indian.
As per the survey, which is based on a study of online preferences of over one million people who visited the website (www.themobileindian.com) in July this year, out of 25 most searched mobile phones on The Mobile Indian, 14 have 8 megapixel or more resolution, and are based on Android operating system.
Handset Hotlist Survey
As per the Handset Hotlist survey, Micromax Canvas 4 is the most searched smartphone in the country. The phone was launched in July and comes with an interesting unlock gesture - you have to blow at the phone or shake it to unlock it.
Also, after a long time Nokia launched a new phone under Asha series - Nokia Asha 501. This phone also made it to the list and bagged the second slot in the handset hotlist.
Commenting on the survey, a spokesperson of The Mobile Indian said, "Many people love to capture things as they happen and then upload to popular social networks like Facebook and Twitter. Nothing can better that than a mobile phone to accomplish it.”
The spokesperson further added, "Since Android based handset are available in different price brackets and have plenty of choices options it is no surprise that it grabs the maximum attention from consumers.”
Of the 25 most searched handsets, eight were from Micromax, seven were from Samsung, two each from Nokia and Xolo, and one each from LG, Karbonn, Apple, Sony, Intex and iBerry.
As compared to last month three handsets from Micomax Canvas 2, Canvas 3D and Canvas HD lost 7, 13 and 16 positions respectively and one handset from Samsung, the Galaxy Grand, lost 16 positions. Also, in this month's handset hotlist 10 new handsets made it to the list out of which two were from Micromax and Samsung and there were one each from Nokia Intex, Xolo, Sony, iBerry and LG.
As far as Relative Score is concerned, there was close competition this month from position number 6 to 17 for grabbing consumer interest. So much so that slot number from 7 to 10 and slot number 11 to15 had 20 and 19 relative scores, respectively.

Read on to find out how
Step 1

Access the WhatsApp application from within your device's application menu or from the home screen where the app icon is placed.
Step 2

Once inside the application access the options menu. It can be accessed by pressing the options key on your smartphone. If you have a tablet then the same is located on the extreme upper right hand side of the device, denoted by three dots. From the popup menu select settings to proceed further.
Step 3

Once the settings sub menu opens select the notifications tab. Here, settings related to popup behavior and notifications related to WhatsApp are located. Do not change any settings unless you completely understand what effect it might have on your device or application.
Step 4
How to manage popup notifications
From the following options select the popup notification tab. Again do not unnecessarily modify other settings.
Step 5
How to manage popup notifications
The device will show a popup with in total of 4 options. The first will give no notification, the second options will offer notifications when the display is on. The third option will give notifications only when the display is off, and the last option will keep giving pop up notifications all the time.
Once you have selected the desired action exit the settings and although it's not necessary, a quick device reboot will allow the options to take effect more efficiently.
